Guitar’s House

Category

Tucked away in a narrow alley of Ho Chi Minh City, Guitar’s House was conceived from the owner’s desire for a home that is both private and filled with light and greenery. Despite the limited footprint, the family prioritized a generous front yard with a large tree—a shaded retreat for tea and conversation. The gate system was designed to open wide when needed, yet remain discreet and airy once closed.

The central concept is a continuous ventilation void that runs from front to back, paired with skylights to draw daylight and breezes deep into the house. This void expands and contracts according to the functional layout, forming a “light core” at the center. This division also allowed the architects to subtly rotate the façade, optimizing orientation and enhancing privacy within the dense alley context.

Eblock masonry walls define the side elevations, lending a raw, tactile character while reducing structural loads. On the ground floor, the living room and kitchen are seamlessly connected, unified by a consistent material palette: terrazzo flooring accented with soft green mosaic tiles, a motif repeated behind the sofa to establish visual continuity across dining and cooking areas. The rustic spirit extends to the use of walnut in its natural dark tones for the dining table, cabinetry, and ceiling finishes.

The master bedroom on the first floor features a wide wooden bed platform lit by the skylight, with glimpses of greenery from the en suite. Children’s rooms are framed by circular windows that open to small planters, inviting nature indoors.

A distinctive feature is the custom ventilation block system, combining glass bricks with protruding concrete elements. These not only cast dynamic shadows across the surfaces but also reduce heat gain from the harsh western sun, while simultaneously becoming a unique architectural signature.

The top floor houses an open, greenery-filled worship space and a front terrace that doubles as a photography set for the owner’s fashion work. Perforated circular openings run throughout this level, creating spatial continuity while expressing the homeowner’s openness and playful character.
